In 2007, Sheila and Nick Gilbey were inspired by the unique charm of this medieval guest house in Charmouth. Built before the Reformation by the last Abbot of Forde Abbey, it has had many uses over the centuries. Charles II stayed here when he was fleeing from Oliver Cromwell's army. In the last century it became a hotel and was named The Queens Armes, as it was thought that Queen Catherine of Aragon may have stayed here.

To fufil Sheila and Nick's vision, the building had to be completely refurbished. A state-of-the-art central heating and hot water system has been installed with twin boilers and pumps to ensure lots of instant hot water for those relaxing baths and invigorating showers. Along the way, they uncovered some of its colourful history, as well as many of its hidden charms. The Abbots House has gradually been brought back to life, and Sheila and Nick have made a focus out of its original features, such as its oak-panelled walls, ornate beamed ceilings and Blue Lias flagstones.
Our Vision for The Abbots House
“We want to create a warm and friendly environment, where our guests can make themselves feel at home, and at the same time, feel as if they were being pampered. Our vision was that each room had that “wow” factor, whilst being comfortable, and that people left The Abbots House feeling relaxed and recharged. As lovers of short breaks ourselves, we know that the extra special touches could make a real difference, and we keep this in mind in everything we do”.
